Free-Flight Measurements of the Transonic Roll-Damping Characteristics of Three RelatedWings
نویسنده
چکیده
Measurements of the roll-damping derivative (lp) of three wing planforms were made by the free-flight roll-balance technique over the Mach number range 0-7 to 1.4. The wings were all of RAE 102 section, 7" 5 per cent t/c and aspect ratio 2.83 but varied in sweep and taper ratio. The two wings of taper ratio 0.33 showed little loss of damping in the transonic region but the 50 deg delta wing suffered a 50 per cent loss of damping at M = 0.96. The results have been compared with simple theoretical estimates and the effects of aero-elasticity have been computed.

Free-Flight Measurements of the Dynamic Longitudinal-Stability Characteristics of a Wind Tunnel
The dynamic longitudinal-stability characteristics of a st,andard wind tunnel interference model have been investigated in free flight over a Mach number range of 0.92 to I, 35.. Measurements of lift-curve slope and manoeuvre margin were obtained, and are compared vjith results from transonic-tunnel tests under low blockage conditions. The analysis was extended to obtain damping derivatives to ...

LE leading edge Transonic free-to-roll and static wind tunnel tests for four military aircraft – the AV-8B, the F/A-18C, the pre-production F/A-18E, and the F-16C – have been analyzed. These tests were conducted in the NASA Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel as a part of the NASA/Navy/Air Force Abrupt Wing Stall Program. The objectives were to evaluate the utility of the freeto-roll test techniqu...

Do Not Loan Effects of Roll on the Free-flight Motion of Statically Stable Bodies
The effects of roll on the free-flight yawing motion of statically stable test models, having linear force and moment characteristics, are discussed in more detail than in previous publications. The correspondence between the damping, frequency, and amplitude of the nutational and precessional vectors which define the motion is listed. Limitations in the use of simplified data reduction procedu...
متن کاملRecent Dynamic Measurements and Considerations for Aerodynamic Modeling of Fighter Airplane Configurations
As airplane designs have trended toward the expansion of flight envelopes into the high angle of attack and high angular rate regimes, concerns regarding modeling the complex unsteady aerodynamics for simulation have arisen. Most current modeling methods still rely on traditional body axis damping coefficients that are measured using techniques which were intended for relatively benign flight c...
